What is Semaglutide
Semaglutide is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. It is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, which means it mimics the effects of the natural hormone GLP-1 in the body. With this option Oklahomans can receive virtual telemedicine consultations with our healthcare provider every 3 months and ongoing access to your provider for questions via email. To ensure you get the most out of our program, call your insurance company before booking an appointment to find out what weight loss medications are covered by your plan without prior authorization. If your insurance covers medications, make sure to write them down for your provider and book the Weight Loss – Insurance Covered option.

What is Tirzepatide
Tirzepatide is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. It is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), which means it activates receptors of hormones secreted from the intestine (glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)) to reduce appetite and food intake. This medication helps to regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin secretion and reducing glucagon secretion. It also slows down the rate at which food is absorbed in the stomach, which can help reduce appetite and promote weight loss. Studies find that Tirzepatide can be more effective for weight loss and has less side effects than semaglutide. It is often used as another option in patients who cannot tolerate the GI side effects of semaglutide.

GLP-1 RAs are medications that have been approved for managing blood sugar levels in individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. These medications work by mimicking the effects of GLP-1, a hormone that stimulates insulin secretion, slows digestion, and suppresses appetite. In addition to their blood sugar management benefits, GLP-1 RAs have become increasingly popular due to their ability to promote weight loss.
GLP-1 RAs are usually administered by injection under the skin. They can be self-administered using a pen device or a syringe, and are typically taken once a week
GLP-1 RAs have been shown to be effective in lowering blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of cardiovascular events, promoting weight loss, and improving overall glycemic control.
Common side effects of GLP-1 RAs include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and headache. In rare cases, they can cause pancreatitis, kidney problems, or allergic reactions.
GLP-1 RAs are generally recommended for people with type 2 diabetes who have not achieved optimal blood sugar control with other medications. They may be particularly beneficial for people who are overweight or obese, as they can help with weight loss and improve insulin sensitivity. Contraindications for GLP-1 RAs are medical conditions or situations that make the use of these medications unsafe or not recommended. They include type 1 diabetes, personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, severe gastrointestinal disease, pancreatitis, and pregnancy/breastfeeding.
